Celebrating the Harvest With Mrs. Wages

Savor the Sweet Taste of Summer: It’s Berry Time!

The season’s first fruits are beginning to burst, and here at Mrs. Wages, we’re ready to do some serious jamming in our kitchens. Those early strawberries, blueberries, black and red raspberries are just fantastic, not only in jams but in pies, pancakes, muffins and sauces for your favorite meat entrées.

Many gardeners and home canners have cherished memories of berry picking with family and friends and the wonderful joy of preserving that delicious sweetness of summer.

From Mrs. Wages Test Kitchens, berries are on the menu for such tasty treats as Berry Smoothies, Jam filled muffins and Raspberry Jalapeno Jam.

From North Carolina, check out recipes for Strawberry Galette and Black & Blue Crumble Pie featuring blackberries and blueberries from the Appalachian Mountains.

Our creative canning blogger Marisa McClellan, Food in Jars, serves up some childhood memories on blueberry pickin’ along with some delicious recipes for Honey Sweetened Strawberry Jam, Pickled Blueberries, and Mixed Berry Jam.

Master Canner and retired extension educator Shirley Camp shares her tips preserving berries along with some great information on the difference between a jam, chutney and marmalade.

From all of us at Mrs. Wages, may you savor the sweet taste of summer and along with preserving nature’s bounty, be sure to pack along some canning memories for years to come…
